Indonesia has eight main islands, but overall the country consists of over 13,000 islands, making it the largest archipelago in the world. These islands all offer different sight-seeing opportunities so you just wish to decide where you need to begin your travels around the islands.
Sumatra, one of the main islands, is full of jungle-like rainforest, rice fields, tranquil waterfalls and, of course, white sandy beaches. In the north of the island is Lake Toba which is the largest in South-East Asia and has spectacular scenery all around.
Arguably the best known of the islands is Bali, a haven for surfers and beach lovers. The surrounding waters are warm so diving is common around the island, and marine life is very alive also.
UNESCO have listed 6 world heritage sites around Indonesia, the most recent being Lorentz National Park which is a colliding point of two continental plates resulting in high mountains. At over 2.5 million hectares in size, it is the largest protected area in South-East Asia.
